The Ethnic Groups in and around An Lac commune

There are 12 villages in the An Lac commune, which have 3,424 people, 732 families (4.7 people/family).

Among the An Lac community, there are five main ethnic groups

Tay (53.9%):

Tays are the second largest ethnic group in Vietnam, mostly living in the northern part along valleys and usually based at the feet of mountains. They are generally agriculturalists, mainly cultivating rice (this is really fresh tasting and better than anything pre-packed from the supermarket).

Kinh (34.9%):

Kinh are the majority ethnic group of Vietnam, comprising 86% of Vietnamese people.

San Chi (8.3%):

There are about 150’000 in Vietnam, generally agriculturists.

Cao Lan (1.7%): 

Cao Lan immigrated to Vietnam from China: - Known officially in Vietnam as the Sanchay. They speak a variant of the Thai language and have a unique kind of literature and art.

Dao (1.2%): 

There are about  474,000 Dao people in Vietnam. They cultivate  well irrigated and intelligently worked fields, rocky hollows, and wet -rice paddies. In the strictly protected area of the Khe Ro forest, there are 1 group of Dao people  which have 8 families and 34 people.

The An Lac commune is one of the  lowest income communes in Son Dong district which is also one of the 61 poorest districts in Vietnam. 65.6% families are considered poor. Despite this the people retain their dignity and are close knit, offering a smile, a welcome with a generosity of spirit for all those they meet. The main economic sector of the commune is agriculture for more than 90% of the population.  People living in the An Lac Commune depend either directly or indirectly on the Khe Ro forest. It provides them with food, wood and non-timber products, that they need for their families or sell to make a living.
